Every week we bring you our advice on which signal-callers have the potential to help your fantasy teams win. We will take into account recent performances, the quarterbacks’ supporting cast, the matchup, and add some smart statistical insights to offer you the clearest picture of which QB to pick up from your waiver wire.
We will only consider QBs who are less than 70% rostered in Yahoo! leagues so as to give you an honest chance at picking one up for your team’s matchup.
Week 2 was (in a word) brutal! Only four quarterbacks mustered 20+ fantasy points, and two of those were Derek Carr (20% rostered) and Sam Darnold (14%). So, chances are you were bitterly disappointed. Through two weeks, four of the Top 10 fantasy QBs are under 70% rostered, with Baker Mayfield currently sitting as QB1. No fantasy analyst in their right mind would have suggested that. But, we have recommended Mayfield, Jayden Daniels (QB6), Geno Smith (QB9), and Sam Darnold (QB10) as streaming options in this article over the opening two weeks. So, stick with us, we are the hot hand!
So, with that caveat, let’s look at the lay of the land for Week 3 of the 2024 NFL season and highlight our recommendations.
QB | Matchup | % Rostered (Yahoo!) | Projected Fantasy Points |
---|---|---|---|
Geno Smith, Seahawks | SEA vs. MIA | 34% | 15.04 |
Baker Mayfield, Buccaneers | TB vs. DEN | 67% | 15.33 |
Derek Carr, Saints | NOS vs. PHI | 20% | 14.90 |
“Grubb Gonna Geno!”
Geno Smith, Seahawks vs. Dolphins
New Seahawks offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has set the tone for Geno Smith over the first two games of the season with an offensive game plan through the air. Smith has responded with a 73.9% completion percentage over 69 attempts to propel himself into the Top 10 fantasy quarterbacks. It has proved to be a key reason why Seattle is 2-0 going into a home game against a wounded Dolphins team. Smith has shown encouraging chemistry with both alpha receiver DK Metcalf and sophomore wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who has opened up the field at all three levels for Smith, something he hasn’t had before in Seattle.
The Dolphins have lost their starting quarterback and their defense is vulnerable through the air while also struggling to rush the passer. Smith goes into the game full of confidence with an improved offensive line and a burgeoning relationships with his receivers. Time for him to write back and tell the fantasy world he is coming.

“Fantasy QB1”
Baker Mayfield, Buccaneers vs. Broncos
This might be your last chance to go and get the top fantasy quarterback so far in 2024. At 67% rostered, Baker Mayfield is finally having the breakout season we expected a long time ago, but it is well deserved as his mastery of the offense and leadership on and off the field have come a long way since his days with the Browns, the team that selected him No.1 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. With an impressive showing in Detroit, where he passed and rushed for a score, Mayfield backed his four-touchdown showing in Week 1 with aplomb. With plus matchups on the horizon for the next month, Mayfield will be the most added signal-caller this week. Mike Evans is eternal and Chris Godwin is reborn in this passing attack that has looked so smooth over the opening two weeks of the season.
The Broncos don’t provide a formidable worry at home for Mayfield, who has added some rushing threat to his game this season, providing a nice fantasy bump to his already league-leading passing ability.

“Hope the Wheels Don’t Fall Off the Carr”
Derek Carr, Saints vs. Eagles
Believe it until you don’t see it – Derek Carr is on fire to start the season under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and we want a piece of that action. Carr has back-to-back 20+ fantasy points in each of the first two games of the year and has weapons at every level to attack defenses, as shown by the humiliation of the Cowboys last week. Rashid Shaheed is almost an automatic 50+ yard score per week at this rate and running back Alvin Kamara has added extra yardage on screens to inflate Carr’s revelatory stats to open the season. The Saints have scored touchdowns on 11 of their first 21 possessions and a shaky Eagles defense that just lost to the Falcons are coming off a short week into the Superdome and face a rude awakening.
