Streaming Quarterbacks: Week 7

Three QBs to stream for Week 7!

Inevitably, there will be weeks when the quarterbacks we’ve chosen to stream won’t do what the game plan calls for. Unfortunately, that happened last week with Jameis Winston, and apologies if that sunk your battleship as well as it did mine in a couple of leagues. Jameis had a week to forget, as not only did he struggle, but he was benched in favor of J.J. McCarthy, in a Giants’ matchup against his former team that ended unceremoniously and with just two passing attempts in the fourth quarter. Winston lives by the seat of his pants, and so do the fantasy owners who end up starting him, as his stat line likely pulled down many in a very low-scoring fantasy week across the league. Winston ended up behind center with a hodgepodge of running backs not named Cam Skattebo and, apropos of nothing, ended on the bench alongside Cam. Jameis was unable to get anything going, finding Tyrone Tracy for a very nice 17-yard touchdown, but otherwise was finding former team members easier than he was other Giants’ players. That’s a bad beat on our part, and it looks like McCarthy may now get the chance to try out for the quarterback position here for the remainder of the year.

Snoop Huntley didn’t play the part this week either, putting himself back on the bench for his fourth Ravens tenure, as he did get 28 rushing yards against the Browns defense, but did hardly anything else in this matchup, as the Ravens lost a winnable matchup against a Browns team that won in a game where only 23 combined points were scored. Thankfully, our final streamer for the week was Aaron Rodgers, and in a season where he’s claimed “this is the one where I retire”, he’s showing up and showing out. While the team has faced adversity on their offense early with injuries to key pieces in Rico Dowdle and Roman Wilson, the team has found ways to win and look offensively potent, with Pat Freiermuth and Germie Bernard showcasing recently in fresh-blood appearances. The Steelers took the game to overtime and pulled out a win against a Bucs team that has struggled to find its footing but certainly has the firepower to show up at a moment’s notice. Let’s dive in and see the three we look to stream this week.

C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans

NYG 5/5 66 18.67

There aren’t many truer phrases than “As Nico Collins goes, the Texans go.” C.J. Stroud has varied in his output at a notable level, and while his play has variables, nothing is more pronounced than Collins’ return to Houston lineups. In the first three weeks of the season, Stroud didn’t have a single game of over 20 fantasy points, only throwing for over one passing touchdown once. Since Nico’s return in Week 4, Stroud is averaging 22.66 points and 2 touchdowns per game, putting him quickly back in the streaming category and as someone who can help at a severely ailing position. Stroud is now the QB9 on the season and is going into a Week 7 matchup against a Giants team that has struggled throughout the season in tackling and run blocking. With David Montgomery potentially rejoining the backfield to double up with Woody Marks, who is starting to showcase what made him a sneaky prospect coming out of the draft, this Texans team may have the most weapons available to them thus far in Week 7. Facing a potential powder keg of poor run blocking, multiple options for rushing, and the return of Nico, this Texans team may have a coming-out party against a Giants team that doesn’t look as strong as their record suggests, struggling for an identity in a Jaxson-less and Cam-less landscape.

Kyler Murray, Minnesota Vikings

IND 5/5 52 18.64

Kyler Murray can be enigmatic as it gets at quarterback, giving us a wide range of potential outcomes comparable to Jameis Winston. While it may leave us to shudder, this matchup is one to capitalize on, as the lowly Colts have had a very difficult time trying to find who they are, and are a defense on the skids. The Colts have removed their general manager after a 2-4 start to the season, and the lone highlight of the season is the continued dominance of running back Jonathan Taylor. To sum up how poor this Colts defense has been, every facet aside from special teams is below average on PFF, averaging 27.33 points per game this season. The two wins on their schedule were matchups where they faced the third-string quarterback for the Commanders, and the other was a matchup where they faced the Texans sans Nico Collins. The Colts found levels of luck in even their two wins, and in their other four games they have allowed a hefty 33.5 points per game, proving they aren’t capable of holding up against NFL-level teams with their talent.

Murray was quality and commanding in his last game against the New Orleans Saints, as he boasted an 80% completion rate and also rushed for 51 yards. This Vikings team had a bye week to get right, and has also seen the return of future Hall of Famer Justin Jefferson to help round out an offense that has found capable footing on multiple fronts, with Aaron Jones also recording three games of over 100 rushing yards in the past 4 games. The Colts will have a hard enough time stopping one facet of the game, but Kyler also poses a high rushing threat, and all in all this spells a very high floor for Murray on Sunday.

Geno Smith, New York Jets

Opponent Matchup Rating Yahoo Roster % Proj. Pts
MIA 4/5 7% 16.32

The Jets and Dolphins face off in a lowly battle of two teams that have combined for two wins over six weeks. It feels almost wrong to look at Geno Smith as our last streamer of the week, but the past two weeks have shown the long shot can sometimes hit. Smith has been very inconsistent this season, but has had 3 of 6 games of over 240 yards passing this season, and could likely find himself in a strong position to do the same this week in what could end in a game of poor defensive showing that allows both teams to put up over 21 points.

Smith won’t have much in the way of rushing yardage, but is going into this game with the return of highly hyped rookie Omar Cooper Jr., and a young running back in Braelon Allen who has rightly turned some heads. Allen has over 100 all-purpose yards over the past two weeks, and seems to be putting himself firmly in discussion for a split backfield when Breece Hall returns. While a loss of Hall could’ve hurt this Jets team in the past, defenses will not be able to scheme up full blitz packages with Allen running as well as he is, and should give Smith more time in the pocket to find new weapons like Cooper and Garrett Wilson on the edge awaiting steady targets. Wilson has seen his numbers lowered this season but is seeing a steady target threshold of 8 targets per game. He is perennially a game-changing talent that can draw multiple defenders throughout a game, and with a Dolphins team that is 21st in the league at overall coverage, Cooper and Wilson could give the Dolphins defense fits. This matchup could likely get even juicier, as Adonai Mitchell could be returning from his absence with a finger injury that could ultimately put the Jets offense in a winning position against a defense that is reeling. Geno won’t do it in an exciting manner, but will likely finish this game with around 250 passing yards and could end his game with two passing touchdowns to boot.
