Mac Jones to Jakobi Meyers

The future is now for the New England Patriots. Seeing 2021 first round draft pick Mac Jones connecting with young undrafted breakout wideout Jakobi Meyers is music to the ears of fans in New England. This beautiful connection on third down thanks to a textbook back shoulder throw from Jones was one of my favorite throws of the week.

Justin Herbert to Keenan Allen

The Chargers once again failed to get the most out of their offense against a stout Vikings defense in another disappointing loss. Justin Herbert was restricted to just 195 yards passing and threw a pick after a sensational defensive play by Erik Kendricks. He did pull out a couple of top quality throws, including this perfectly floated pass to Keenan Allen when moving up out of the pocket. Herbert does brilliantly to sense the backside pressure and keep his momentum going forward while keeping his eyes downfield. Elite.

Kirk Cousins to Justin Jefferson

On the other side of the ball, Kirk Cousins put in one of his best performances of the season to put the Vikings in position for the win. The main catalyst was his connection with second-year phenom Justin Jefferson to the tune of nine catches for 143 yards. Cousins split triple coverage with this pinpoint throw over the middle to his young superstar. Wow!

Tom Brady to Mike Evans

Apart from this vintage Tom Brady sideline throw to Mike Evans for a 40-yard score, it was an otherwise unmemorable outing from the seven times Super Bowl champion. Outplayed by Taylor Heinicke, Brady sealed the Bucs fate early by throwing two interceptions in the first quarter. Still, quality deserves recognition and this was one of the best throws I saw this weekend – an effortless lob from the pocket for Evans to kick on in stride.

Taylor Heinicke to John Bates

Take a bow, Taylor Heinicke. The journeyman quarterback engineered the shock result of the round by toppling Brady and the Bucs thanks to a series of impressive offensive drives. I could have included the touch pass throw to DeAndre Carter for a score or any number of throws to Terry McLaurin, but this key third down throw to backup tight end John Bates was his best of the day. Heinicke stays composed in the pocket under pressure before placing the ball just out of reach of the linebackers in coverage for Bates to haul it in. Masterful.

Jalen Hurts to DeVonta Smith

The most complete performance of the season so far from Jalen Hurts was littered with high level throws as the quarterback continues to develop in Shane Steichen‘s offensive scheme. Hurts has upped his looks to rookie receiver DeVonta Smith over the past couple of games and it is starting to pay off. This fantastic deep ball to Smith for a touchdown is as good as the amazing effort from Smith to go up and over Denver’s 2021 first round draft pick Patrick Surtain II.

Tua Tagovailoa to Jaylen Waddle

Tua is back! Inspiring the Dolphins to the win over the Ravens, former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa immediately took up from where he left off in building chemistry with rookie receiver Jaylen Waddle. Facing first and long after a holding penalty, Tua shows aggression in pushing the ball downfield and elite execution in finding Waddle outside the numbers and before the Ravens secondary can pounce.

Jimmy Garoppolo to Deebo Samuel

In one of the most surprising performances of the week, Jimmy Garoppolo reached new heights with a fantastic showing against a tough Rams defense. Jimmy G stepped up and delivered this dart over the middle for Deebo Samuel to break free for the game-ending score early in the fourth quarter. This kind of anticipation and delivery from Jimmy G has been too few and far between in his time with the 49ers. We will sit and enjoy this throw fo what it was, however.
