Kansas City Chiefs vs San Franciso 49ers
San Francisco 49ers
Quarterback
- Jimmy Garropolo: 14/20, 188 yards, 1 TD
- Nick Mullens: 8/11, 84 yards
Jimmy Garropolo looked effective after mostly struggling against the Broncos in week 2. I think it’s worth considering that the Broncos might just have a really good defense. Garropolo looked rushed in week 2 in a way he didn’t here. No real concerns for the 49ers offense moving forward.
Running Back
- Tevin Coleman: 9 rush, 19 yards, 1 rec, 2 yards
- Matt Breida: 7 rush, 44 yards, 2 rec, 31 yards, 1 TD
- Jeff Wilson: 12 rush, 45 yards, 2 TD
Tevin Coleman was the starter at RB for the 49ers, but Matt Breida got worked in quickly and was more effective. Breida played on the first drive and caught a 20 yard TD on the 2nd drive while Jimmy G was still playing QB. Breida continues to be a steal in drafts. We’ve still had no sign of Jerick McKinnon, but Jeff Wilson scored 2 TDs. Don’t forget about Wilson as an extremely deep sleeper.
Wide Receiver/Tight End
- Richie James: 4 targets, 4 rec, 66 yards
- Jordan Matthews: 3 targets, 2 rec, 33 yards
- Dante Pettis: 5 targets, 3 rec, 36 yards
- Deebo Samuel: 3 targets, 2 rec, 27 yards
- Marquise Goodwin: 2 targets, 1 rec, 9 yards
- Kendrick Bourne: 3 targets, 2 rec, 25 yards
This group is a talented mess. Everyone got some snaps with the first team, but Matthews, James, and Bourne were the ones on the field late in the game. Pettis still seems like the favorite for the #1 receiver spot, but they’re looking more and more like a team that’s going to rotate guys, at least until someone establishes himself.
Kansas City Chiefs
Quarterback
- Patrick Mahomes: 8/10, 126 yards, 1 TD
- Kyle Shurmur: 9/12, 67 yards
Mahomes looked effective and then Fritz’s grandson Kyle Shurmur took over and played moderately well. Nothing much to report here… Mahomes is still really good and looks ready to get back to work as the regular season gets going.
Running back
- Damien Williams: 1 rush, 2 yards, 3 rec, 74 yards, 1 TD
- Darwin Thompson: 3 rush, 8 yards, 3 targets, 2 rec, 9 yards
- Carlos Hyde: 1 rush, 1 yard
Damien Williams started and scored an impressive 62-yard touchdown on a wheel route on the third play of the game. Darwin Thompson was the second RB to enter and didn’t do anything noteworthy. Probably the most notable is the fact that Carlos Hyde didn’t get a touch until the 3rd quarter and barely got any action at all, suggesting that Damien Williams is back in the driver’s seat in the Chiefs RB competition.
Wide Receiver/Tight End
- Tyreek Hill: 3 rec, 31 yards
- Mecole Hardman: 4 targets, 3 rec, 40 yards
- Sammy Watkins: 1 target, 1 rec, 13 yards
Again, not a ton to report. This team is more or less the same as in 2018. It’s worth noting, though, that Mecole Hardman looks like a mismatch when he was left in the game against the San Francisco backups. He’s just another weapon for the Chiefs offense and one more guy for Mahomes to throw touchdowns to.
