What We Saw: Week 14

We Watched Every Week 14 Game So You Don't Have To - Here's What We Saw

Miami Dolphins vs New York Jets

#AdamGaseRevengeGame here in Week 14. I joke, but Gase and the Jets were able to avoid further embarrassment that what they’ve shown this season by beating the Dolphins on a game-winning field goal by Sam Ficken with time expiring. The kick was gifted too, off of an overturned DPI call that left Miami head coach Brian Flores fuming. Such is life though, and the Jets improved to 5-8 on the year, which is one more win than they had last year (4-12 finish). Miami falls to 3-10.

Miami Dolphins

Quarterback

  • Ryan Fitzpatrick: 21/37, 245 yards, 1 INT, 2 fumbles, 2 sacks | 7 carries, 65 yards

Ryan Fitzpatrick had the yardage today but wasn’t able to find the end zone. No Dolphin did, as all 21 of their points came off the foot of kicker Jason Sanders. Fitzpatrick was rather sloppy too, throwing an interception and fumbling twice. The 65 yards rushing were certainly unexpected and did aide to his fantasy stat line a bit. Having targeted a total of nine different receivers due to a DeVante Parker concussion, you would have expected scoring opportunities, yet no one behind Parker was able to get the job done. That’s been the case all season long in Miami, and if Parker can’t clear protocol by next Sunday, I wouldn’t consider Fitzpatrick to be on the streaming radar against the Giants.

Running Backs

  • Patrick Laird: 15 carries, 48 yards | 5 targets, 4 receptions, 38 yards
  • Myles Gaskin: 4 carries, 5 yards | 2 targets, 1 reception, 6 yards

Patrick Laird was a popular waiver add this week, and if you started him in a PPR league, you were awarded with a decent return. That’s truthfully because of his four receptions, as the Jets run defense continues to be stout and their identity as a unit; they held Laird to under 50 yards on 15 carries. If you are in a position to start him next week verse the Giants you can, and even possibly expect slightly more production. Myles Gaskin remains out of sight out of mind.

Wide Receivers/ Tight Ends

  • Isaiah Ford: 9 targets, 6 receptions, 92 yards
  • Allen Hurns: 8 targets, 5 receptions, 68 yards
  • DeVante Parker: 2 targets, 2 receptions, 28 yards
  • Mike Gesicki: 2 targets, 1 reception, 6 yards
  • Albert Wilson: 2 targets, 1 reception, 5 yards

As mentioned earlier, Parker left after a second-quarter reception in which he slammed his head on the turf. He wouldn’t return, and no doubt his exit crippled some fantasy lineups. If you’ve been riding the Parker wave in recent weeks, you hope Miam’s WR1 clears the concussion protocol and can return next week. In his absence, Isaiah Ford and Allen Hurns led the way in targets and receptions, though no one benefited because both players are likely hanging in your waiver pool. The biggest surprise was Mike Gesicki having only two targets and one reception. As a Jets fan, even I was expecting for him to have a much more productive game; not that I’m mad of course! He should bounce back next week against the Giants.

New York Jets

Quarterback

  • Sam Darnold: 20/36, 270 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT, 1 sack | 3 carries, 3 yards

Even in a game where Sam Darnold didn’t look his best, he still got the job done. This was without the likes of Le’Veon Bell (illness) and Ryan Griffin (ankle), who exited the game on the first series. It was a forgettable day for Darnold though regardless, as his one interception could have been more due to some bad throws. Yet, the two touchdowns outweigh the negatives here. That being said, Darnold is for sure off the streaming radar on a short week next Thursday against the Ravens.

Running Backs

  • Bilal Powell: 19 carries, 74 yards | 3 targets, 2 receptions, 14 yards
  • Ty Montgomery: 9 carries, 31 yards | 3 targets, 3 receptions, 30 yards

With Bell out, veteran Bilal Powell led the way with 19 carries to the tune of 74 yards. You would have liked him to have been involved more in the passing game though. If you happened to start him, he just got you double-digit points in full PPR formats. Assuming Bell is back next week, Powell will lose any standalone value. It’s also worth noting he was carted to the locker room late in the game with a foot injury. Ty Montgomery had a bit of involvement but remains off your roster.

Wide Receivers/ Tight Ends

  • Robby Anderson: 11 targets, 7 receptions, 116 yards, 1 TD
  • Jamison Crowder: 7 targets, 3 receptions, 30 yards
  • Demaryius Thomas: 4 targets, 2 receptions, 28 yards, 1 TD
  • Vyncint Smith: 3 targets, 1 reception, 37 yards
  • Ryan Griffin: 1 target, 1 reception, 8 yards
  • Daniel Brown: 2 targets, 1 reception, 7 yards

Third time’s a (continued) charm. Make that three solid games in a row for Robby Anderson. He was able to find the end zone on a wide-open route, and now has 14 receptions in back to back games; 18 total receptions and 303 yards in his last three. He’s the clear WR1 in New York, but next week against the Ravens will be a tough task to ask of Anderson. Treat him as a flex option on Thursday night. Demaryius Thomas was able to find the end zone for his first touchdown this season, a score built off YAC. However, he’s not a viable fantasy starter the rest of the way. The same can truthfully be said for Jamison Crowder as well. He started so strong with Darnold, and it’s been a down three games in a row for the slot man. The targets (7) were there for Crowder in this game, but he only turned them into three receptions for 30 yards. I wouldn’t trust starting him next week.

Griffin’s ankle injury was caused what seemed to be an accidental rollup by his lineman. His day was done before it can get going, as the incident occurred on the Jets’ opening drive. His backup Daniel Brown was a non-factor, and if Griffin’s were to miss next week’s game, I wouldn’t consider Brown a viable replacement option.
