Buccaneers vs. Falcons
Buccaneers
Back on the Field
Jameis Winston did not miss a beat in his first start of the year, throwing for 395 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also tacked on 31 yards on five rushes. Winston was the top performing fantasy quarterback of the week due large in part to how much he spread the ball around, hitting up nine different receivers over the course of the game. Winston was a deflected pass in the end zone (that turned into an interception) away from making a statement in his return. For now, Winston looked as though he should be considered in weeks where he is not matched-up against one of the league’s worst defenses.
Running back by Committee?
It was the Peyton Barber show in Week Six, with 13 attempts for 82 yards and four rushes for 24 yards and a touchdown. Ronald Jones, despite double-digit carries in Week Four before Tampa Bay’s BYE was relegated to only one run for three yards. Barber’s Week Six fantasy score was more than his first four weeks combined – this one game is nothing to trust, but under Winston could be indicative how he will be used the passing game moving forward, which would add value to Barber’s play week-to-week. After Week Six, it would appear as though Barber is the go-to back once again.
The Third Receiver
If I am going to be technical, it would be Mike Evans, who finished third in targets with five – DeSean Jackson and Chris Godwin both finished with nine a piece. As noted above, Jameis Winston managed to work in receptions from nine different targets although there was a clear divide among the target share itself. In part, as a result, no receiver had significant value in Week Six, with O.J. Howard scoring the most fantasy points followed closely by Godwin. Even then, most of their value came from touchdowns than it did receiving yards as the top yardage came from Adam Humphries and a 51 yard reception early in the third quarter. Evans, Godwin, and Jackson still seem like strong fantasy plays moving forward.
The Tight End
As some noticed, I wrote my piece too early in the week last week (as I was out of town when I otherwise would have written it at the end of the week) and O.J. Howard come back from his MCL sprain earlier than expected. Howard caught all four of his targets for 62 yards and a touchdown while Cameron Brate caught his sole target for a touchdown.

Falcons
Ryan Rebounds at Home
QB Matt Ryan had a rough go of it in Pittsburgh. However, he followed that up with a monster day at home Sunday. Completing 31-of-41 passes for 354 yards and three touchdowns without any interceptions. Ryan will look to continue his success when the New York Giants come to town for a showdown on Monday Night Football. Ryan has been masterful in every performance at home this year, but it will be interesting to see how he fairs against a Giants team that has been particularly stingy against the passing game.
Coleman Salvages Day with late Touchdown
RB Tevin Coleman once again let his owners down when handed the starting reigns. If not for a receiving touchdown late, it would have been an extremely poor outing. Meanwhile, RB Ito Smith managed to score another rushing touchdown. He is making the most of his opportunities and is pushing for more work. If RB Devonta Freeman makes it back from injury, this backfield could turn into a three headed monster. Given that scenario, this committee could be one to avoid for fantasy purposes.
And then there was one
WR Julio Jones emerged the only starting wideout to be unscathed by injury. WR Mohamed Sanu and Calvin Ridley were injured during this one and risk missing the game on Monday night. Reports are that Sanu’s injury was a minor aggravation, while Ridley’s was a bone bruise. Before the injuries, all of Atlanta’s wideouts were headed for promising days, as Matt Ryan aired it out early and often. Sanu cracked things open with an early score and Julio caught ten passes for 143 yards. Julio had a great chance to end his scoreless streak, but alas, could not come up with it in the end zone. Life will be tough for Julio against the Giants if the other field stretching options beside him are sidelined. The Giants’ secondary has been one of the few things for New York to hang their hat on this season.
Hoop keeps Rollin’
TE Austin Hooper finished second in receiving in this one. Building on last week’s big game in Pittsburgh, Ryan looked Hooper’s way for many chain moving grabs. Much of these targets could have been due to injuries at wide receiver, but it was no secret the Bucs cannot cover tight ends. Much of Hooper’s usage could have been matchup driven over the last two weeks, but you cannot do much worse given the very short list of solid tight ends. If your TE’s last name is not Ertz, Gronkowski, or Kelce, you may want to consider starting him.
A new Hope
It was not pretty. The Falcons defense gave up 29 points on the day, but they made a lot of key stops that allowed them to win the game on the final drive. DB Brian Poole and DB Damontae Kazee both had key interceptions that broke the back of the Bucs’ offense. It could have been worse for the Bucs, but DB Robert Alford and Poole dropped what should have been two more interceptions. The Falcons proved that they can bend and not break, even on life support. As long as the offense scores enough points, the defense might just be able to sustain. Best case scenario, LB Deion Jones will be back at some point this season to bring some more stability to the defense.
