Beating the Spread: Picks for Week 8

The teams are starting to take shape. I believe that we are getting a much better handle of things and have gotten the short end of the stick the last couple weeks. A couple forced throws, the occasional backdoor cover, a goal-line fumble, and mis-evaluated teams have cost us some games to this point. But now, we expect it. (My picks in blue, Joe’s in red)

Sunday, Oct. 28

Washington (-1) @ NY Giants – [42.5]

Washington is only favored by 1 in this game. I do not understand one iota of it, but here we are. Bet the Redskins because why would you want to link yourself to the sinking ship that is ‘Big Blue’? New York just traded two top defensive players in Eli Apple and ‘Snacks’ Harrison. I simply don’t see how the Giants overcome this mess.

Baltimore (-2.5) @ Carolina – [43.5]

The Carolina defense has struggle against the pass this year. The Ravens have three extremely talented wide receivers and a top defense in the NFL. I expect a ton of downfield pass interference calls to help out the Baltimore offense and Cam Newton to struggle to move the ball.

Indianapolis (-3) @ Oakland – [49.5]

Jon Gruden didn’t tell his team that the trade involving his top receiving option, Amari Cooper, had been made official. That’s just unacceptable. Derek Carr is being hung out to dry for no good reason. Meanwhile, the Colts are the plucky soon-to-be contender, as long as Andrew Luck can stay healthy. I say the Colts win by 17.

NY Jets @ Chicago (-8) – [45]

I’m back again to pick against Sam Darnold. I think the Jets are the one of the most overrated teams in football and Vegas is slowly catching on. They played the Vikings last week and were 3.5 point underdogs. They lost by 20. Look for the Bears to absolutely dominate this game; if they limit the running game, the Jets have no chance.

Green Bay (+8) @ LA Rams – [56.5]

The Rams will take on a Green Bay team that is coming off a bye. Normally I’d say the Rams should cover in this scenario, but Rodgers has all his weapons back. Rams by 7.

New England (-14) @ Buffalo – [44.5]

Buffalo has looked stingy at times this year. They have been in significantly more competitive games than I expected…but not with Derek Anderson. He looked atrocious last week and will continue that trend against a Patriots team that has found its stride in recent weeks. Not a chance, the Bills’ offense can keep up with the Patriots.
