Coaching Time: 2021 Best And Worst Play-Callers For Each Skill-Position

Eli Grabanski looks at every offensive-minded head coach and offensive coordinator, and explains which ones could have a significant impact on fantasy value.

Takeaways

  • Joe Lombardi gets a lot of crap for his time as an offensive coordinator with the Lions, but from a fantasy perspective, his offense threw the ball a ton…this bodes well for Justin Herbert‘s fantasy upside.
  • In the 20 games that Scott Turner has been a play-caller, his offense has been pass-happy even with subpar quarterbacks…it will be interesting to see if this continues with Ryan Fitzpatrick as the team’s starting QB.

  • Kellen Moore ranks in the top 3 among coaches in both team passing attempts and passing yards per game…Dak Prescott is in a great situation and will be a strong QB1 in 2021.
  • The Saints head coach Sean Payton ranks in the top 5 in passing yards and passing touchdowns, while Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael ranks in the top 5 across the board in team passing attempts, passing yards, and passing touchdowns. While Drew Brees being his starting quarterback for much of that time plays a big factor, the winner of the QB battle between Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill could be a sleeper in fantasy leagues.

  • New Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen ranks in the top 5 of both passing attempts and passing yards per game. While he’s not going to be the play-caller on gameday for the Philadelphia Eagles (that would be head coach Nick Sirianni), he should be able to help Jalen Hurts improve on his passing numbers from last year.
  • Eric Bieniemy ranks at the top of both passing yards and passing touchdowns per game…while he has done well in his role, this probably has a lot more to do with Patrick Mahomes than it does with Eric Bieniemy.

  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich ranking in the top five of passing touchdowns is encouraging to see if you plan on taking a shot on Tom Brady.
  • New Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith lands at number four on the list of most passing touchdowns per game despite also ranking in the bottom five of passing attempts per game. This shows that his passing offense was extremely efficient during his time in Tennessee and you can see why he landed a head coaching job this offseason. It will be interesting to see if this level of efficiency continues with Matt Ryan who has had some phenomenal seasons in the past himself.

Takeaways

  • Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman‘s offense is extremely run-heavy and will likely attempt the fewest passes in the league again in 2021. You are drafting Lamar Jackson because of his game-breaking rushing upside, not because you think he’s going to throw for 4000+ passing yards.
  • New Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith had his offense extremely run-heavy in Tennessee because he had a star running back in Derrick Henry. In Atlanta, we shouldn’t expect him to have his offense run more than pass like he did with the Titans, but there’s still a pretty good chance that the Falcons have a more balanced approach than they have had the last few years (684 passing attempts in 2019 and 628 passing attempts in 2020).

  • Both of the Cleveland Browns coaches land on this list for the fewest passing attempts. Baker Mayfield is an above-average quarterback, but his fantasy upside may be limited in this offense.
  • Miami Dolphins co-offensive coordinator Eric Studesville lands on this list in all three categories. It is important to note that he only spent four games as the Denver Broncos interim head coach back in 2010 where Tim Tebow was his primary quarterback so you might have to give him a bit of a mulligan here.

  • Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll surprisingly has one of the worst career averages for team passing yards per game among active offensive-minded coaches. He worked with a lot of subpar quarterbacks prior to Josh Allen, but nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if the team can maintain the passing success from 2020.
  • Washington Football Team offensive coordinator Scott Turner has seen his offenses average the fewest passing touchdowns per game of any coach on this list. He hasn’t been blessed with the best quarterbacks – working with Will Grier, Kyle Allen, Dwayne Haskins, and post-injury Alex Smith. Ryan Fitzpatrick will likely be the best quarterback he has worked with to date, but you probably shouldn’t expect Fitzpatrick to light the world on fire in this offense.

  • Carolina Panthers coaches Matt Rhule and Joe Brady both landed in the bottom five for passing touchdowns per game. Teddy Bridgewater‘s conservative playstyle didn’t help here, but this might be an issue again in 2021 given Sam Darnold‘s struggles so far in his career.
  • Both of the Cincinnati Bengals coaches are in the bottom five of passing touchdowns per game. Joe Burrow entering year two should hopefully help their rankings in the future.
