San Francisco 49ers

Quarterback:

  • Jimmy Garoppolo (Sit)

The Ravens are on fire right now and their defense has been excellent, especially their secondary. So far this year, the Ravens have allowed the fifth-fewest fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks, and given how up-and-down Jimmy G has been this year, I’m gonna pass on him except in the deepest of leagues. Yea, I realize that he’s thrown for multiple touchdowns in four out of his last five games, but none of those games have come against a defense nearly as good as the Ravens’ defense. There are better options out there, including better streaming options if you need them.

Running backs:

  • Tevin Coleman (Start/low-end RB2)
  • Matt Breida (Sit, questionable to play)
  • Raheem Mostert (Sit)

Last week, the 49ers scored 37 points and Tevin Coleman led the backfield with…..11 carries for 39 yards. Now, he did get a touchdown, and he also caught two balls for 10 yards, so I’m not discounting his performance, but he’ll be going up against a Ravens defense that has allowed the 10th-fewest fantasy points to opposing running backs so far this year.

Still, given that he’s likely leading the backfield even if Matt Breida is back (more on that in a second), the volume alone and the likelihood that the 49ers will struggle through the air make Coleman a low-end RB2 or high-end flex.

As for Breida, he’s questionable to play this week as he recovers from an ankle injury, and even if he returns, there’s no way you can trust him against the Ravens’ defense. And if Breida is out, the rest of the timeshare will likely go to Mostert. Now, Mostert did snag a touchdown last week, but there’s no way you can really trust him. Coleman’s the only 49ers running back I trust this week, and I barely trust him.

Wide receivers/Tight ends:

  • Emmanuel Sanders (Start/low-end WR2 pending health)
  • Deebo Samuel (Start/Flex)
  • George Kittle (Start/TE1)

Emmanuel Sanders hasn’t been playing healthy the past couple of weeks, which explains his lack of production. If he’s actually fully healthy this week, he has the talent to produce low-end WR2 numbers even against this Ravens secondary. He’ll likely be covered by Marlon Humphrey for most of the game, which I think could limit his production, but again if he’s healthy, he could still be good.

If he isn’t healthy, there’s the potential Deebo Samuel could produce like he has lately. Samuel has had double-digit fantasy points in four out of his last five games and could do that again. That being said, he’s likely to be covered by Marcus Peters who has been excellent since coming to Baltimore. I think only one of these two will put together a fantasy-relevant day.

As for George Kittle, you’re starting him. Yes, the Ravens defense has shut down tight ends too, but it’s George Kittle. He’s going to be heavily involved in the passing game and he’s one of the best tight ends in the game, so start him.

Baltimore Ravens

Quarterback:

  • Lamar Jackson (Start)

I don’t care if Lamar Jackson is facing the ‘84 Bears or an army of Sith, you’re starting him in fantasy this week. He’s the MVP favorite, he’s putting up historic numbers, he’s incredible. Against the New England Patriots’ defense, arguably the best defense in the NFL right now, Lamar put up around 28 fantasy points, and he’s put up at least 30 fantasy points in four out of his last six games, so yea, start Lamar.

Running backs:

  • Mark Ingram (Start/RB2)

Ingram has been producing pretty consistently as a fantasy asset, but this week he’s going up against a 49ers defense that has allowed the third-fewest fantasy points to opposing running backs. Now, even against the Patriots, Ingram scored double-digit points, so you’re still rolling him out there, but temper your expectations. There’s obviously a decent chance he ends up with a touchdown given how crazy this offense has been, but the 49ers defense has been fantastic this season.

Wide receivers/Tight ends:

  • Marquise Brown (Start/Flex)
  • Mark Andrews (Start/TE1)

The 49ers secondary is exceptional. Whether it’s Richard Sherman, K’Waun Williams, or Emmanuel Moseley, you don’t want your receivers being covered by anyone on this team. So far this year, they’ve given up the sixth-fewest fantasy points to opposing wide receivers. But, we all know how explosive Hollywood Brown is, and if there’s anyone who can break off a big game, it’s him, especially since he’s likely to be covered by Moseley for most of the game, which poses as the most advantageous matchup of all the Ravens receivers.

As for Andrews, it’s the volume and chemistry with Lamar that you’re banking on here. The 49ers have given up the fewest fantasy points to opposing tight ends, but what happens when the unstoppable force meets the immovable object? If Lamar is going to throw, he has to throw to someone, and Andrews has been that someone for a lot of this season. It’s entirely possible the 49ers defense totally shuts Andrews down, so understand that risk, but it’d be hard for me to bench Andrews, especially given how shallow the tight end position is.

Hey Aaron! Thanks for putting these out every week. I’m struggling to figure out which 2/3 to start out of Lockett, Carson, and Hopkins this week. Could also throw Waller or Hilton into the mix, but I don’t really think they’re in the same realm of value as the three aforementioned guys.

I’m leaning Lockett/Hopkins, even though Hopkins could toss up a donut as Amari did, Carson also doesn’t have an easy matchup and it seems like the snap count share is trending in Penny’s direction. Any thoughts?

Thanks Aaron – I look forward to your column every week. Two questions, Gordon v Ingram, and can you pick two from these three: Allen, Beckham, Robinson. thanks again!
