What We Saw 2023: Week 6

The What We Saw team recaps everything you missed from Week 6 of the 2023 NFL season.

Two teams entered Week 6 with undefeated records: the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles, and both were primed to sleepwalk their way into Week 7.  The 49ers faced a Cleveland Browns team starting P. J. Walker at quarterback instead of Deshaun Watson. Meanwhile, the Eagles faced a New York Jets squad led by Zach Wilson as a result of the Week 1 injury to Aaron Rodgers.

The 49ers took their first loss after rookie kicker Jake Moody missed a game-winning, last-second field goal, and not to be outdone, Eagles kicker Jake Elliot missed a 37-yarder midway through the 4th quarter that ultimately made the Eagles’ late-game heroics task tougher. Jalen Hurts‘ ill-advised throw to Dallas Goedert was intercepted by Tony Adams, sealing the Eagles’ fate and prompting the remaining members of the 1972 Miami Dolphins to pop the corks on their champagne bottles.

Aside from the fall of the final unbeaten teams, the main story of the day centered around quarterback injuries. Justin Fields left in the 3rd quarter with a dislocated thumb, Ryan Tannehill gave way to Malik Willis due to an ankle injury, and Jacksonville Jaguars signal caller Trevor Lawrence sustained a knee injury at the end of his game against the Indianapolis Colts. But wait, there’s more! Baker Mayfield left in the 4th quarter with a hand injury, and Jimmy Garoppolo was taken by ambulance to a local hospital to have a back injury examined. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to all.
