New Orleans Saints @ New York Giants
Final Score: Saints 34, Giants 27
Writer: Jay Felicio (@GMenJay on Twitter)
Three Up
- Tyler Shough – Call him Abe Shough because the man got four scores.
- Malik Nabers – Had a monster fantasy day with Bad Jameis and… JJ McCarthy.
- Kendre Miller – 20 carries is 20 carries.
Three Down
- Jameis Winston – This week the poor plays outweighed the great ones.
- Cam Skattebo – It seems the turnover issues caused him to drop down (or even completely out of) the depth chart.
- Najee Harris – Unable to take advantage of the Skattebo “benching”.
New Orleans Saints
Quarterback
Tyler Shough: 16/30, 144 Yards, 3 TD, 0 INT | 5 Carries, 32 Yards, TD
The yardage wasn’t all that great, but Shough threw three touchdowns and rushed for a fourth in the Saints’ victory over the Giants. Shough’s left hand is still bothering him, as evident by Shough handing off with his right hand all game. It looked a little weird, but it never caused a problem. The Giants were able to get pressure on him, but Shough handled it like a boss and got the ball out to his checkdowns instead of eating sacks.
Notes
- Took zero sacks on 30 attempts.
- Threaded one to Chris Olave for 12 to extend the drive under two minutes in the first half that ended in Carlson’s 58-yard field goal.
- After the Giants fumbled the kickoff, drove the Saints down and tossed a two-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to Bryce Lance with one second left in the half.
- Threw an absolute dime of an 18-yard touchdown deep right to Olave early in the fourth quarter.
Running Back
Kendre Miller: 20 Carries, 70 Yards | 2 Targets, 2 Receptions, 0 Yards
You can’t argue with 20 carries, but at 3.5 yards per clip, don’t get overly excited. Kamara was banged up coming into the game and shaken up in the second, not playing in the fourth with the Saints having a solid lead. Miller looks much better on paper than he did on the field. He’s worth picking up, but he’s no league winner.
Alvin Kamara: 7 Carries, 34 Yards | 4 Targets, 2 Receptions, 35 Yards, TD
Came down on his backside reaching for an overthrown ball and went straight to the blue medical tent, then came back in the same drive. Was great in pass protection and looked like vintage Kamara early in the third, taking a screen for the touchdown on his third straight touch on the drive. Later in the same quarter, he had a 15-yard run up the middle with a Giants illegal use of hands flag on top of it. Kamara didn’t play in the fourth, but it was likely a combination of nursing injuries and the big lead held by New Orleans.
CJ Donaldson: 6 Carries, 39 Yards, Fumble (LOST) | 1 Target, 0 Receptions, 0 Yards
Donaldson saw limited work, and just as he started to rip a few nice runs, he lost a fumble. He had a nice 17-yard run to the right end on the opening Saints drive of the second half. Earlier, he scored what appeared to be a 1-yard touchdown, which was then reversed on a review. Shough scored on the next snap. If things couldn’t get worse, he lost a fumble in the middle of the fourth, recovered by Arvell Reese at the NYG 48. The Giants scored six plays later.
Wide Receiver/Tight End
Chris Olave: 7 Targets, 4 Receptions, 43 Yards, TD
A disappointing fantasy total considering Shough threw three touchdowns. Olave had a should-have-had catch on the Saints’ first drive, but made up for it by pulling down the needle-threader to extend a drive right before the half that led to a 58-yard field goal. He only had one deep target, but it was a valuable one: an 18-yard touchdown on a perfectly thrown pass by Shough.

Devaughn Vele: 6 Targets, 3 Receptions, 42 Yards
Vele looked like the best receiver on the field not named Nabers. Oddly enough, right after the announcers brought up explosive plays off play action, he got one. Vele ran a comeback that Shough hit him on, spinning out of a Banks tackle, and picked up another eight or so. He could have had a better day, but Shough overthrew him on a couple of passes.
Bryce Lance: 4 Targets, 2 Receptions, 9 Yards, TD
The rookie receiver dropped a quick slant that led straight to a missed field goal, then caught the touchdown that tied it at the half on a fourth and 1. He also added 2 kick returns for 47 yards.
Oscar Delp: 2 Targets, 2 Receptions, 10 Yards
Barion Brown: 1 Target, 1 Reception, 5 Yards
Juwan Johnson: 2 Targets, 0 Receptions, 0 Yards
Noah Fant: 1 Target, 0 Receptions, 0 Yards
A whole lot of nothing from the Saints tight ends, but notable due to Juwan Johnson‘s goose egg just a week after his first game with single-digit fantasy points. Two weeks is a trend, but don’t rage drop him just yet.
New York Giants
Quarterback
Jameis Winston: 14/26, 152 Yards, 1 TD, 2 INT | 3 Carries, 4 Yards
The issues that have plagued Jameis Winston the past few weeks didn’t have the nice shiny stat line to cover up the muck. Winston was pressured all day, but he wasn’t able to extend and make plays as he had over his last two games. Winston took back-to-back sacks early in the second, and just like previous weeks, kept making his receivers bail him out. Continued to funnel everything to Nabers and Likely and floated a beauty to Tyrone Tracy for his lone score. But it was a bit too much Bad Jameis today with way too many errant throws, and the last one was an ugly pick that got him benched. He also could have had a third pick on an attempt deep right for Mooney in the third, but it was wiped out by offsetting penalties.
J.J. McCarthy: 11/21, 243 Yards, 1 TD, 1 INT | 2 Carries, 26 Yards
Don’t be fooled by the 243 yards. Most of J.J. McCarthy’s production came on chunk plays in “kinda” junk time. Technically, the Giants were still in the game, but the Saints defense was playing soft. At no surprise to anybody, his first drive ended with a pick thrown behind Fields and right to the DB. McCarthy hit Nabers for a big gain but, like Jameis, threw it over the top, and Nabers made the play for him. Even his touchdown pass to Isaiah Likley was high, but the breakout tight end was able to come down with it. Five gains of 20 or more accounted for 166 of his 243 yards. Take those out, and he was 6/16 for 77 yards.
Running Back
Cam Skattebo: 0 Carries, 0 Yards | 0 Targets
Arguably the most shocking thing on the day was Cam Skattebo ending the day with no carries, no targets, and no stats of any kind. It appears he was soft-benched, or at least dropped in the depth chart. Singletary being active for the first time in three weeks was the tell. Skat mostly appeared on the second possession, the 12-play, 93-yard touchdown drive where all four Giants backs got snaps. His last offensive play came late in the second quarter.
Tyrone Tracy Jr.: 6 Carries, 18 Yards, TD | 3 Targets, 2 Receptions, 27 Yards, TD
Tyrone Tracy Jr. finished the first drive that Najee Harris started and dove in for the score on a floater from Winston, outrunning the coverage and reaching for the pylon as he drifted toward the sideline. Added a second touchdown on the ground in the fourth. Still just averaged three yards per carry, but likely earned himself some extra touches in the coming weeks.
Najee Harris: 4 Carries, 2 Yards
Najee Harris took four carries for two yards and had no targets, unable to get anything going. Started the first drive but Tracy finished it. He honestly looked washed.
Devin Singletary: 4 Carries, 14 Yards | 1 Target, 1 Reception, 19 Yards
Got a couple of touches and looked fine, but shouldn’t lead to anything of significance.
Wide Receiver/Tight End
Malik Nabers: 15 Targets, 12 Receptions, 165 Yards
Malik Nabers is officially quarterback-proof. Winston funneled everything to him once again, and he kept making plays on bad balls. Nabers had his fourth catch by the middle of the second quarter and broke three tackles on a short pass for a first down. Even his big gain from McCarthy was high; Nabers went up and got it.
Isaiah Likely: 11 Targets, 6 Receptions, 99 Yards, TD, 2 Pt Conversion
Winston once went to Isaiah Likely over and over again when things broke down and on third down. The touchdown from McCarthy was high, but that is what made it possible. He jumped and got it, nice one-handed grab in there too. He looked every bit as electric when Winston was benched, and the Likley breakout likely continues regardless of who’s under center for the Giants in Week 7.
Charlie Jones: 3 Targets, 2 Receptions, 66 Yards, Fumble (LOST)
Charlie Jones should buy a lottery ticket after catching a pop-up for a big gain that probably should have been offensive pass interference.
Malachi Fields: 8 Targets, 2 Receptions, 19 Yards
Encouraging to see eight targets, not so encouraging to only come down with two of them. It wasn’t all on Fields, though. The pick on McCarthy’s first drive was thrown behind him and right to the DB, and the second pick that was reversed was also targeting him.
Darnell Mooney: 2 Targets, 0 Receptions, 0 Yards | 1 Carry, 20 Yards
Darnell Mooney never really had a chance on his two targets. Winston threw one too high and badly underthrew the other. To be fair, Mooney probably should have had both, but they certainly weren’t easy catches. His lone positive play was a 20-yard end around at in the first. Left the game with a neck injury and didn’t return.
