What We Saw: Week 12

The QB List staff catches you up on everything you missed during Week 12 of the 2020 NFL season.

Browns @ Jaguars

Somehow the Browns are 8-3. If you watched this game, you would have no idea they had that kind of record as they struggled to slow down Mike Glennon and the 1-10 Jaguars. Jarvis Landry and Nick Chubb carried the Browns to a 27-25 victory as a two-point conversion that would’ve tied the game fell incomplete. Let’s dive in and see what we can take away from this game.

Cleveland Browns

Quarterback

Baker Mayfield: 19/29, 258 yards, 2 TDs, 2 sacks | 4 carries, 1 yard

We’ll have to check with Browns’ fans, but Baker Mayfield was incredibly polarizing in this game. There were moments where he threaded the needle and then, well, then there was a throw that I’m 69% confident that I could’ve made for a touchdown.

Mayfield’s first dropback was one to forget. Dawuane Smoot’s sack set the tone for a three-and-out on the Browns’ opening possession.

Following a Jaguar field goal, D’Ernest Johnson took the kickoff 43 yards to open the second possession on the 45-yard line. The Browns started their second possession with a play-action fake which had Mayfield bootleg out to the left. He connected with Jarvis Landry on a short pass and Landry turned it into a 21-yard gain. Mayfield connected on short passes to Nick Chubb and Stephen Carlson before hooking up with Landry in the end zone.

The Browns took over following another Jaguar field goal in the 2nd Quarter. Mayfield kept the drive alive by connecting with KhaDarel Hodge for 17 yards on 3rd and 10. He evaded pressure by rolling right out of the pocket and delivered a strike to Hodge. Two plays later, he reconnected with Landry for a 27-yard gain.

Later in the drive, Mayfield connected again with Hodge on 3rd and 3 to set up 1st and Goal from the 5-yard line.

Up to this point, Mayfield looked decent. But on the very next play, he overthrew a wide-open Rashard Higgins. Two plays later, the Browns settled for a field goal.

The next time the Browns took over, they found themselves trailing 13-10. Following a couple of Nick Chubb runs, Mayfield once again connected with Landry for a 23-yard gain that landed them in Jacksonville territory. Landry actually drew a pass interference flag on the play. Later in the drive, Mayfield found Landry again for a 15-yard gain on 3rd and 6. One play later, Mayfield hit Austin Hooper for his second touchdown pass of the game.

The Browns’ next possession came to open the 2nd Half. However, on the first play of the drive, disaster struck as Harrison Bryant fumbled and gave the Jaguars the ball on the Cleveland 30-yard line.

Following a Jacksonville touchdown that put them up 19-17, the Browns took over for their second possession of the 2nd Half. On his second pass attempt of the drive, Mayfield took an ugly intentional grounding penalty setting up 2nd and 21. A Chubb run made it 3rd and 16 and Mayfield connected with Rashard Higgins for a 15-yard gain. On 4th and 1, the Browns went play-action fake and hit Hodge along the sidelines for a 10-yard gain. Two plays later, on 3rd and 2, Mayfield took a shot to the end zone for Kareem Hunt, but it fell incomplete. Hunt took a shot on the play and was slow to get up. The Browns settled for a field goal.

Following a Jacksonville punt, the Browns rode Chubb and Hunt’s legs down the field. The duo accounted for 71 of the 90 yards on the drive. On 2nd and Goal from the 1-yard line, the Browns went play-action fake and Mayfield looked to connect with Bryant over the middle for a touchdown. However, when he rolled off the defender, the ball rolled out of the back of the end zone. The ruling on the field was incomplete and there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn the ruling on the field. The very next play, Nick Chubb ran it in for a touchdown putting the Browns up 27-19.

Following another Jacksonville punt, the Browns took over at their own 2-yard line. An offensive holding penalty put the Browns in a 2nd and 11 at their 1. Mayfield once again connected with Landry for a big 19-yard gain. Two plays later, Mayfield hit Landry over the middle for another 19-yard gain. Later in the drive, on 3rd and 1, Mayfield rolled out to his right and had his pass clang off Kareem Hunt’s hands.

Running Backs

Nick Chubb: 19 carries, 144 yards, 1 TD | 3 targets, 3 receptions, 32 yards

Kareem Hunt: 10 carries, 62 yards | 2 targets

Out of 67 offensive snaps, Nick Chubb played 41 while Kareem Hunt played 28. Jacksonville has been notoriously kind to opposing running backs this year and that didn’t change today. Want to talk about chunk yardage? Chubb and Hunt combined for 15 plays of 7 yards or more, including three runs over 20 yards. Chubb out-touched Hunt 4 to 1 in the red zone and converted one of those carries for the score.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends

Jarvis Landry: 11 targets, 8 receptions, 143 yards, 1 TD

KhaDarel Hodge: 3 targets, 3 receptions, 31 yards

Rashard Higgins: 2 targets, 1 reception, 15 yards

Austin Hooper: 2 targets, 2 receptions, 13 yards, 1 TD

Harrison Bryant: 2 targets, 1 reception, 13 yards, 1 fumble lost

Stephen Carlson: 1 target, 1 reception, 11 yards

Taywan Taylor: 1 target

I’ve got to start paying attention to player’s birthdays. Jarvis Landry turned 28 yesterday and he had his best game this year. He saw a 38% target share. Of those targets, he saw 3 in the red zone, 2 deep balls, and 2 on 3rd down. Landry was a beast in terms of yards after the catch too. This catch was the 2nd 19-yard reception of this drive and it showed off Landry’s ability to rack up the YAC.

Here’s another look at his touchdown reception.

It’s going to sound strange, but KhaDarel Hodge had a great game. All three of Hodge’s catches resulted in 1st downs. Two of which came on 3rd down and one came on 4th down. Hodge only played on 28 snaps, but he certainly made the most of them.

If not for Mayfield’s inabilities, Rashard Higgins would’ve had a touchdown today, but alas, he was overthrown. Higgins saw just 2 targets, but he played on a wide receiver high 42 snaps.

Austin Hooper saw just two targets, but one came in the end zone which was the touchdown. He saw 47 snaps to Harrison Bryant’s 42. David Njoku played on 40 snaps but didn’t see a target.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Quarterback

Mike Glennon: 20/35, 235 yards, 2 TDs | 2 carries, 6 yards

The Cleveland defense managed to make Mike Glennon look like a decent NFL quarterback, which speaks way more to Cleveland’s defense than to Glennon’s ability.

The Jaguars punted on their first possession. Glennon completed a pass to Laviska Shenault for a first down. Shenault carried the pile around 6 yards of the 11-yard gain. Following a Browns’ punt, the Jaguars took over on the 50-yard line. Following a pair of runs by James Robinson, Glennon went play-action fake and took a shot deep for Keelan Cole. The Jaguars’ wideout was able to get his hands on it in the end zone, but it was knocked away by Andrew Sandejo. Glennon managed to complete a pass to Tyler Eifert that set up a 54-yard field goal.

The Jaguars took over following a Browns’ touchdown that made the score 7-3. The Jags offense ran through James Robinson all game. On this drive, Robinson accounted for 37 of the 69 yards. Glennon completed a pass to Collin Johnson for 13 yards before taking a deep shot to Cole, which drew an interference penalty. Glennon connected with Shenault to get the ball down to the Cleveland 9 yard line. On 3rd and Goal, Glennon failed to connect with Cole and they settled for the field goal.

Following a Browns’ field goal, the Jaguars took over. On the opening play, Glennon went play-action fake and hit Cole on a crossing route for a 20-yard gain. Later in the drive, on 3rd and 1, Glennon scampered for the first down. The very next play, he hit Johnson for a 46-yard touchdown to put Jacksonville on top 13-10.

The Browns answered with a touchdown of their own and the Jags took over with 1:10 to play in the half. Glennon connected with Cole and Robinson to pick up 24 yards. He then took this shot down the field to Cole.

On the next play, Glennon hit Eifert for a 6-yard gain on 3rd and 4. Glennon then connected with Robinson for 9 yards to get the ball down to the 36-yard line, but the 54-yard field goal was no good.

The Jaguars took over on the Cleveland 30-yard line following a Harrison Bryant fumble. Two Robinson runs set up 3rd and 5 for Jacksonville. Glennon scrambled up the middle to pick up 4 and then on 4th and 1, he connected with Robinson for a 14-yard gain. Two plays later, Glennon connected with Eifert for the touchdown to once again put the Jags up 19-17.

The next Jags possession took over following a Browns’ field goal. Following two short gains to start the drive, Glennon connected with his favorite target, Collin Johnson for a 20-yard gain. Three plays later though, the Jags were punting the ball away.

Following a Browns’ touchdown that made it 27-19, the Jags started the drive with two straight first downs. One on the ground with Robinson and a completion to Shenault. But three plays later, including a batted ball at the line of scrimmage, the Jags were punting once again.

Down 8, Glennon started the Jags’ final drive from their own 22-yard line. Glennon connected to James O’Shaughnessy and Johnson for a combined 20 yards before Robinson busted a big 27-yard gain. On the next play, Glennon took a shot deep in the end zone that was just a little high for Eifert. Two incompletions later, Glennon faced 4th and 10. He went under pressure and was sacked, but a questionable lowering the head to initiate contact on the sack put the ball on the Cleveland 12-yard line. Glennon connected with O’Shaughnessy for a 7-yard gain and two plays later, Robinson found the end zone. Jacksonville went for two but an awful attempt at a jump ball in the back of the end zone failed.

Running Backs

James Robinson: 22 carries, 128 yards, 1 TD | 6 targets, 5 receptions, 31 yards

James Robinson played on 63 of 65 snaps with Devine Ozigbo seeing the other 2 snaps. To me, it’s incredible that Robinson was an undrafted free agent. He looked like a top 10 back and that’s on a terrible Jaguars team. Robinson saw 6 opportunities in the red zone, converting one for a touchdown. He also had 7 carries that went for 7 yards or more. Here’s his touchdown where he wills his way into the end zone.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends

Collin Johnson: 8 targets, 4 receptions, 96 yards, 1 TD

Keelan Cole, Sr.: 6 targets, 3 receptions, 44 yards

Laviska Shenault, Jr.: 4 targets, 3 receptions, 31 yards | 1 carry, 6 yards

Tyler Eifert: 4 targets, 3 receptions, 16 yards, 1 TD

James O’Shaughnessy: 4 targets, 3 receptions, 17 yards

Ben Ellefson:ย 1 target

Mike Glennonย was inconsistent at best and that shows in the pass catcher’s production. With D.J. Chark and Chris Conley out, Collin Johnson saw a season-high 52 snaps. He was Glennon’s favorite target and made an incredible play to get into the end zone on his 46-yard touchdown reception. He had another big 20-yard catch that put the Jags into Cleveland territory. Johnson saw 3 deep targets and was targeted in the end zone on the Jags’ 2-point attempt.

Keelan Cole played on a team-high 61 snaps and saw four deep targets if you include the one that he drew a pass interference penalty. He also saw an end-zone target on a 2-point conversion attempt. Look at the route that Cole ran when he drew the PI penalty.

Laviska Shenault was pretty quiet, but he played on 59 snaps. He saw just 4 short targets but showed off his athleticism by willing himself to the first down marker.

Tyler Eifert played on 39 snaps and saw two end zone targets, converting one for a touchdown.
