What We Saw: Preseason Week 3

The WWS Team catches you up on the final weekend of the preseason

Dolphins @ Jaguars

Final Score: Jaguars 31, Dolphins 18

Writer: Chad Simpson (@CaoChadTTV on Twitter)

Author note: Our thoughts go out to those lives impacted by the senseless tragedy in Jacksonville this weekend. As well as Daewood Davis who was carted off and hospitalized, leading to the suspension of the game in the 4th quarter.

Jags beat Dolphins in game truncated by injury.  River Cracraft shines his way to a roster spot. Tyreek Hill did Tyreek Hill things.

Three Up

  • Tim Jones– A 74-yard touchdown likely keeping you on the team gets you top billing.
  • Tyreek Hill– Only 1 catch, but it was a catch that looked like peak form Hill getting heaps of YAC on a quick throw over the middle from Tua.
  • River Cracraft – Cracraft stepped up and delivered a standout performance, leading his team in targets and yards, in order to secure his position and surpass the lackluster performance of the corpse of Robbie Chosen for the final roster spot.

Three Down

  • Elijah Cooks – Although Cooks had the most targets on the team, he was unable to secure a spot on the roster.
  • Robbie Chosen – He is going to be an all-pro on the senior citizen flag football team with Stetson Bennett.
  • Snoop Conner – Needing the game of his career he somehow was outplayed by NOOOOOOOOOOO sorry I can’t do it I can’t say anyone was outplayed by HIM. Anyways Snoop’s dud will send him packing for a new team in a few days.

Miami Dolphins

| Preseason Week 1 | Preseason Week 2 |

Quarterback

Tua Tagovailoa: 4/6, 67 yards | 1 carry

Tua looked shaky in this one missing some throws and just being off with his timing. Those issues should not be a factor going forward and Tua comes into the season with elite QB1 upside. Unfortunately, Tua is one bad hit away from being the next Austin Collie sent to pasture with another concussion which needs to be factored into your draft value.

Notes

  • Gets ready for the regular season in style with the typical pass to Tyreek for 30+ yards to open the game.

Missed Opportunities

  • Drive gets derailed after with a 25 yard loss on a high snap fumble followed by a dirt throw.
  • 2nd drive derailed by a subpar throw on 3rd and goal.

Skylar Thompson: 15/24, 135 yards, 2 INT | 3 carries, 18 yards

Skylar is my #1 dynasty QB stash for a reason. Accurate with great tools and a good head on his shoulders. If something should ever happen to Tua, Skylar will be ready to step in and shine. Tonight however was not that night as he missed several key plays and misread the defense on his 1st interception.

Running Back

Raheem Mostert: 4 carries, 7 yards

Quiet night for Mostert who fails to follow up a great week 2 outing. Mostert has showcased quality tools at times this preseason and could thrive with usage.

Salvon Ahmed: 4 carries, 43 yards | 1 target, 1 reception, 5 yards

May have done enough to secure roster spot with a gaudy 1o.8 YPC. Fantasy relevant as long as he’s behind 2 injury prone RB and a rookie.

Notes

  • Nice outside run for a monstrous 41 yard gain.

Missed Opportunities

  • Fails to gain any more yards in next 2 consecutive carries on drive.

Chris Brooks: 6 carries, 33 yards | 1 target, 1 reception, 10 yards

Brooks scores 2 TD, likely doesn’t make team.

Myles Gaskin: 6 carries, 23 yards | 5 targets, 5 receptions, 30 yards

Leads team with 11 combined touches, roster status unknown.

Wide Receiver/Tight End

Tyreek Hill: 1 target, 1 reception, 32 yards

Tyreek did the Tyreek thing on his lone target, taking it for a huge gain after catching it short across the middle.

Cedrick Wilson Jr.: 5 targets, 2 receptions, 29 yards

Wilson a former deep sleeper is a boom or bust type who will occasionally pop off for a big TD in a game if he makes the roster.

Braxton Berrios: 1 target, 1 reception, 16 yards

Berrios’ usage will be something to watch in the regular season. A volume guy in NY, if Berrios can carve out a similar role with better QB play he could be a flex-worthy WR.

River Cracraft: 8 targets, 5 receptions, 52 yards

Cracraft leads Dolphins receivers in yards, targets.

Robbie Chosen: 3 targets, 1 reception, 15 yards

I wish he had Chosen to retire.

Missed Opportunities

  • Another game where he does nothing on his way out of Miami.

Jacksonville Jaguars

| Preseason Week 1 | Preseason Week 2 |

Quarterback

Trevor Lawerence: 8/10, 92 yards

Trevor Lawrence enters the season in contention for QB1. After a 2nd year leap that coincided with getting him actual weapons, the generational talent goes into year 3 with even more toys with the addition of Tank Bigsby and Calvin Ridley.

Notes

  • Great placement on opening throw to Ridley.

C. J. Beathard: 8/10, 134 yards, TD, sack

Beathard has strong night in relief, averages 13 YPA. Beathard is forever going to be more valuable in real life for his solid game management skills than he ever will be in fantasy.

Running Back

Travis Etienne Jr.: 8 carries, 39 yards, TD

Etienne, my pick for RB1 this year, gets a short score in final warmup. A dynamic playmaker, he will step into the shoes of 2022 Austin Ekeler with a younger faster and potentially stronger body.

Notes

  • Etienne showcases elite acceleration on 9 yard gain.

Tank Bigsby: 6 carries, 37 yards, fumble (lost)

Bigsby has rough night, turns ball over at goal line. Bigsby is a divisive player for fantasy, with some pushing him as the lead back in this offense.

Notes

  • First carry he takes the entire line of scrimmage with him to turn a 1 yard gain into a 5 yard gain.

Missed Opportunities

  • Backbreaking turnover at the goal line derails promising drive.

D’Ernest Johnson: 6 carries, 26 yards | 2 targets, 2 receptions, 8 yards

A fantasy darling a couple seasons ago, Johnson had a quiet night that puts him right on the edge of the bubble.

JaMychal Hasty: 2 carries, 16 yards, TD

Hasty scores TD, should make the team and continue in his occasionally viable role in the Jags offense.

Wide Receiver/Tight End

Calvin Ridley: 3 targets, 3 receptions, 50 yards

If you were curious what Calvin Ridley would look like after a year off or concerned that he might not be as committed to the game, all I can say is watch this.

He’s back, folks, and the Lawrence/Ridley connection is going to be a deadly one in 2023.

Christian Kirk: 2 targets, 1 reception, 8 yards

Abbreviated night for the Jags 2022 #1 receiver. The jury is still out on what the addition of Ridley will do to Kirk and owners should keep a keen eye on the first couple of weeks.

Zay Jones: 3 targets, 2 receptions, 10 yards

Zay Jones, after years of under performing, had a breakout year in 2022. Unfortunately for Zay, there are just too many bodies now to forecast him to meet or exceed that performance.

Tim Jones: 2 targets, 1 reception, 74 yards, TD

Catches defense napping for massive TD, likely cements him for the final WR spot on the team.

Elijah Cooks : 4 targets, 3 receptions, 35 yards
