New England Patriots
Quarterback
Drake Maye: START, QB1
The Patriots have been a year (or two) ahead of schedule this season as they vie for the top seed in the conference, and that has everything to do with the elite-level play they’re getting from Drake Maye. He has the arm talent to make every throw on the field, the anticipation and ball placement to allow yards after the catch, and the rushing ability that unlocks considerable upside for his fantasy managers. He should absolutely feast against a Jets defense that has been mailing it in since October.
Running Back
Treveyon Henderson: SIT (Concussion)
Rhamondre Stevenson: START, RB2
D’Ernest Johnson: SIT
TreVeyon Henderson exited last week’s game with a concussion, and, generally speaking, that injury has resulted in a minimum 1-game absence this season. This opens the door for Rhamondre Stevenson to retake control of this backfield, if only for a game. We saw what this means from a fantasy perspective throughout much of the early part of the season, and it wasn’t the most exciting thing in the world, but Stevenson should have the volume floor to comfortably be started as an RB2 this week. Just hold on to the football, okay Mondre?
Wide Receiver
Kayshon Boutte: SIT
Mack Hollins: SIT
Stefon Diggs: START, WR3
Landing on which Patriots receiver to start this season has been a weekly spin of the roulette wheel. They deploy a deep rotation at the position, and Maye’s stellar play allows even the most fringy of players to capitalize on a big play and ping onto the fantasy radar. Stefon Diggs has been the most consistent performer this year, but is lucky to play 60% of snaps in any given week. He is the best of the available options this week, but it’s not a very comfortable click given the run-heavy game script that awaits the Patriots.
Tight End
Hunter Henry, SIT
You can do worse than Hunter Henry as your starting Tight End this week, but you can likely do better as well. Henry is firmly in that 3-for-30 middle class of the position and doesn’t have a great chance to break through that label in a week that is unlikely to feature much passing for the Patriots.
Defense/Special Teams
New England Patriots, START
The Patriots have far from an elite defense this season, but a start against the Brady Cook-led Jets is what streaming dreams are made of. In any other week, they’d likely rank as the top available option, but the slew of backup quarterbacks starting this week has the Patriots DST settled in as a top-5 option instead.
New York Jets
Quarterback
Brady Cook: SIT
Please tell me you’re not having to make this decision at this point in the season. Even those in the deepest of Superflex formats are likely better served by starting a skill position player or a backup tight end over Brady Cook this week.
Running Back
Breece Hall: SIT
Isaiah Davis: SIT
Kene Nwangwu: SIT
I cannot, in good faith, put the word “start” next to any of these players, but technically, Breece Hall is still ranked as a fringe flex play in deeper formats. Despite clearly being the Jets’ best offensive weapon, the usage, or lack thereof, for Hall has been absolutely maddening this season. He has been mired in a 3-or-4-way split in this backfield for most of the year, and the Jets refuse to tap into his upside as a pass-catcher. This game script should theoretically set up nicely for some passing-game work for Hall, but I wouldn’t count on the Jets to suddenly make the logical choice this week.
Wide Receiver
Adonai Mitchell: START, WR3
John Metchie III: FLEX, WR4/5
Isaiah Williams: SIT
The dual-headed reclamation projects of Adonai Mitchell and John Metchie III have been one of the silver linings to a lost season for the Jets. After struggling with some untimely drops, Mitchell has emerged as the more appealing option of the two, but the often-trailing Jets provide plenty of targets to the receivers. These targets coming from the unreliable arm of Cook make both Mitchell and Metchie very volatile options, but options nonetheless in the wackiness that is Week 17.
Tight End
Mason Taylor SIT
While there is some long-term promise for the Jets’ rookie Tight End, his weekly contribution has him far away from fantasy consideration. Taylor has only broken into double-digit scoring four times this season and is buried down the rankings this week.
Defense/Special Teams
New York Jets SIT
The Special Teams unit is maybe the lone bright spot for the Jets this season but even that isn’t enough to consider starting them in this matchup against a Patriots offense that is firing on all cylinders.
