Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Quarterback

Tom Brady (Start, QB1)

Well, last week sucked for Tom Brady owners. Coming off three straight multi-touchdown games, Brady put up a stinker against the Saints, throwing for 209 yards and three interceptions. It seems like Brady is a machine against everyone not named the New Orleans Saints. Against Carolina and going against a high volume passing offense on the other side of the ball, this could be a shootout. Another positive for Brady is that the hope is Chris Godwin will have more use of his fingers on his left hand than he had last week, as he could only put pressure on the ball with 8 fingers as opposed to the normal 10. Not to mention, Brady has another week of Antonio Brown being involved under his belt. In a week with Patrick Mahomes on bye, Brady barely squeaks into the QB1 tier.

Running Backs

Leonard Fournette (Start, Flex), Ronald Jones (Sit)

So the memo is to always start your RBs against Carolina, and that has been profitable as they have allowed the fifth-most points to the position. However, this didn’t equate to much against the Giants and Raiders for Ronald Jones, who has basically been relegated to backup duty with the Bucs trailing last week and since his costly fumble two weeks ago. He has been in a nosedive production-wise since he had three straight games over 100 yards, and until that changes, I have no confidence. Leonard Fournette has been another story as he has become the pass-catching back in a high volume passing offense. He boasts at least six targets in every game since returning in Week 7 and this is his best matchup yet given his recent opportunity share. The one rush last week is concerning on surface level, but if you watched the game the run had to be abandoned right away. Start him in your flex with confidence.

Wide Receivers/Tight End

Chris Godwin (Start, WR2), Mike Evans (Start, Flex), Antonio Brown (Start, Flex), Rob Gronkowski (Start, TE1)

Good news and bad news here. The good news is that if you have a Buccaneer, you are set up to have a starter. The bad news is that there are so many that they all get knocked down a tier except for the tight end where it is a wasteland anyways at the position. As I stated earlier, Chris Godwin was playing through a fractured finger and figures to still have ill-effects from that given that he probably will still be in a finger brace of some kind. Again, last week was abysmal for all parties involved as the Buccaneers offense imploded, but in every sub-15 point performance game this season Brady has bounced back to throw multiple touchdowns. If that is the case here, one should head Godwin’s way. Mike Evans saw the most production last week, but with the expected increase in involvement from Antonio Brown, they are both better left for flex expectations for the time being. AB had news come out of an official lawsuit, but as that investigation continues to be ongoing, he should be on the field for now. Rob Gronkowski saw a great stretch as a stud TE1 and then ended up with a stinker last week. If Brady throws multiple touchdowns, Gronk always has a good chance to spike one and you probably don’t have better options on a week where Travis Kelce is also on bye.

Carolina Panthers

Quarterback

Teddy Bridgewater (Sit)

If you didn’t know, Teddy Bridgewater is actually fifth in the league in passing yards. Unfortunately, he has just a measly 11/6 TD: INT ratio through the air which limits his upside. After seeing his value jump with the reinsertion of Christian McCaffery last week, he, unfortunately, is already going to be without CMC this week due to a shoulder injury. With the inconsistencies we have seen in fantasy output alongside the matchup with a usually tough Tampa Bay defense, Teddy is best left on benches this week unless you are in a pinch and need a replacement for Mahomes.

Running Backs

Mike Davis (Start, Flex)

While we have seen Mike Davis perform as an RB1 from Week 2-5, we have also seen him perform as a borderline flex play from Week 6-9. After CMC went down again this week with a shoulder injury, Davis is the lead dog again. He will be the benefactor of a few more dump-off passes, but with how involved the WR position has been and the emergence of Curtis Samuel as a rushing threat, Davis just isn’t seeing the usage that he did when the offense was treating him like CMC-lite. He has starting appeal, but only as a flex play this week.

Wide Receivers

DJ Moore (Start, Flex), Robby Anderson (Start, WR2), Curtis Samuel (Start, Flex)

Coming into last week, I would have told you that the only wideout I have any confidence in is Robby Anderson who has burst onto the scene after leaving the Adam Gase dungeon. Now I have increased confidence from an unlikely source. First, let’s talk about Anderson who has been a WR2 or better in 7 of 9 starts and went for 9/109 last time out against the Bucs. He is a WR2 that has breakout WR1 upside weekly with his target share. With no CMC he will be relied upon even more. The player that I have increased confidence in is Curtis Samuel who has gotten involved on the ground and through the air. This has been enough to keep him afloat and even put up three straight double-digit games. In a good matchup he is trending up towards WR2 territory, but for now, let’s temper expectations a bit with the matchup. DJ Moore is someone I debated as a recommended sit, but he is an upside Flex play as we have seen with three games at 19 PPR points or more, but also five single-digit games. I can understand if you are benching him right now after only three targets last week, but if you can stomach it I would give him another chance this week.

I am starting Jones/Chubb at RB and Thomas, Chark and Cooks at WR. Who then would you recommend at Flex out of the following: Hunt, Edmonds, Justin Jefferson or DJ Moore? Maybe Hunt should start over Chubb this week? (12 team ppr league) It’s an embarrassment of riches to be sure and results in a bit of a paralysis by analysis.

  2. Steve says:

RB’s – Henderson, Edmonds, Taylor & Drake. Which 2 would you start? would you consider starting both Edmonds & drake (if he’s healthy)? Thanks. Great article. Look forward to it every week.

Tough choice, which two: Allen, Brown, Fuller?
