Pittsburgh Steelers
Quarterback
Aaron Rodgers: SIT, QB2 (Startable in Superflex)
Aaron Rodgers has had a few three-touchdown games, but I’m wary of starting him in Paris. The Saints are allowing the eighth-most passing yards this season, but Rodgers ranks 31st with an -0.10 EPA (Expected Points Added) per dropback. The Saints have held opponents to one passing touchdown in three of six games and only allowed more than two passing tuddys once. Considering Jayden Daniels, Trevor Lawrence, and Josh Allen are on bye (Justin Herbert is too, but whatevs), Rodgers could be a very real decision you have to make in 1QB leagues. Look elsewhere if possible.
Running Back
Jaylen Warren: START, RB1
Rico Dowdle: FLEX, RB3
Lew Nichols: SIT
With how well Jaylen Warren had been playing and how Head Coach Mike McCarthy had been talking him up, I was shocked to see Rico Dowdle get just five fewer opportunities in his first game back from injury. Warren is still the lead back, but Dowdle seems to have established enough of a role that he can be started in the right matchups as a FLEX. I’d say the Saints, who allow the most points to the position per game, are the right matchup. Warren’s 5.5 yards per carry ranks fifth in the league and keeps him in RB1 range with a juicy matchup. If Dowdle gets enough carries, especially near the end zone, he could return FLEX value in this matchup as well.
Wide Receiver
Germie Bernard: START, WR3
Dk Metcalf: START, WR3
Ben Skowronek: SIT
It appears Germie Bernard has arrived. Averaging almost eight targets per game over his last three, he ranks four spots ahead of DK Metcalf (WR22 to WR26) over that span. Metcalf is still the team’s leader in targets with nine per game, and Bernard’s 5.2 aDOT (tied for sixth lowest) makes Metcalf the much higher upside play, for now. The Saints have allowed 12 completions over 20+ air yards this season, tied for third most. Both are startable, but Metcalf is better suited for a big day against NOLA.
Tight End
Pat Freiermuth: SIT
Darnell Washington: SIT
Pat Freiermuth has four touchdowns but is averaging 30 yards a game and was just out-targeted by Darnell Washington six to three last week. The Saints give up the sixth-most points to tight ends, but starting either is praying the matchup does the heavy lifting.
Defense/Special Teams
Pittsburgh Steelers: START
The Steelers bring the heat with nearly three sacks per game and hold opponents to 307.5 total yards per game, the ninth-fewest.
New Orleans Saints
Quarterback
Tyler Shough: SIT, QB2 (Startable in Superflex)
It was a bounce-back week for Tyler Shough against the Giants, but he should bounce back to your bench in 1QB leagues against the Steelers. Pittsburgh is a bottom-five fantasy matchup for quarterbacks, and Shough is still dealing with reportedly broken bones in his non-throwing hand. He’s just outside the top 12 or so, and I’d look elsewhere if possible. I do prefer him over Rodgers this week, for the record.
Running Back
Alvin Kamara: FLEX, RB3
Kendre Miller: FLEX, RB3
CJ Donaldson: SIT
You see 20 carries for Kendre Miller and think he’s taking over the backfield, but there were a few factors in play. Alvin Kamara was banged up heading into Week 6 and briefly left the game in the 2nd after hitting the ground hard. Despite the final score, the Saints were handily in control for much of the 2nd half, leading to Kamara not playing in the fourth. Miller averaged a mere 3.5 yards per carry and totaled zero yards with his two catches. Both should be playable as FLEX options, although I like Kamara a little more due to the fact that the Steelers allow the 10th most receiving yards to the position.
Wide Receiver
Chris Olave: START, WR1
Devaughn Vele: START, WR3
Bryce Lance: SIT
It may seem weird to see both Chris Olave and Devaughn Vele ranked so high given the difficult matchup and low projected point total. But on a week with four teams on bye, averaging 7+ targets per game is enough to consider you a pretty solid start in fantasy. They’re both just one play from making your day, and Olave’s 14 deep targets rank second-most at the position. Olave and Vele are volume plays you’re looking to come down with a long catch or two.
Tight End
Juwan Johnson: STREAMER
Le sigh. Ladies and gentlemen, I think it’s over. Juwan Johnson got a big ole goose egg last week, scoring just 5.6 points the week prior. After seeing seven or more targets in three of the first four weeks, Johnson has seven combined in the last two. Sacré bleu. With Jordyn Tyson expected back soon(ish), Johnson’s weekly fantasy startability is hanging by its last thread. Baguette.
Defense/Special Teams
New Orleans Saints: STREAMER
Pittsburgh is giving up 3.2 sacks a game. That’s it. That’s the whole streaming case.
