Denver Broncos
Quarterback
Bo Nix: START, QB1
This is more of a matchup call than it is a Bo Nix call. Nix infamously has the second-lowest aDOT in the league and scored fewer than 10 fantasy points in two straight. But the Cardinals are a top-three matchup and have given up the second-most passing touchdowns this season. If there’s ever a time for Nix to get back to playing like the Nix of old, it’s against Arizona. Hold your nose and put him in your starting lineup.
Running Back
J.K. Dobbins: START, RB2
RJ Harvey: FLEX, RB3
Jonah Coleman: SIT
New season, same annoying Denver backfield. RJ Harvey is the pass-game guy (most weeks), ranking second at the position in target share. J.K. Dobbins handles 69% of the carries and all the work inside the five. Arizona is a middle-of-the-pack matchup, but allows the fewest receptions to the position, lowering Harvey’s floor. Dobbins is a low-end RB2 with touchdown upside, and Harvey a FLEX. Oh, and Jonah Coleman is practicing again and could return as early as this week. He’s not worth starting yet, but make sure he’s not floating out there on your waiver wire.
Wide Receiver
Jaylen Waddle: START, WR3
Courtland Sutton: FLEX, WR4
Troy Franklin: SIT
Jaylen Waddle handles a 22% target share and more than a third of the Broncos’ air yards, making him the only Denver receiver you should feel remotely comfortable starting. And that’s only as a WR3. The Cardinals have allowed 10 touchdowns to receivers this season, so you can take a shot on Courtland Sutton too as a touchdown-dependent FLEX.
Tight End
Evan Engram: SIT
Arizona is a top five fantasy matchup for tight ends, but Evan Engram is averaging 22 yards a game with a single touchdown all year. Great matchup, wrong tight end.
Defense/Special Teams
Denver Broncos: START
Denver is tied for the third-most takeaways and fifth-most sacks per game.
Arizona Cardinals
Quarterback
Jacoby Brissett: SIT, QB2 (Startable in Superflex)
Maybe Jacoby Brissett heard it was Pumpkin Spice season and decided to turn into a pumpkin himself. Brissett has a matching 5:5 touchdown-to-interception ratio over his last three games and a grotesque 5.7 yards per attempt. Denver is one of the blitz-heaviest teams in the league and is tied for the third-most interceptions this season. Brissett is startable in Superflex, but you won’t have fun doing it.
Running Back
Jeremiyah Love: START (If Active)
Tyler Allgeier: FLEX, RB3
Bam Knight: FLEX, RB3 (If Love is OUT)
If Jeremiyah Love is active, he’s in your lineup. But he had yet to practice at the time of writing, so there’s a better-than-average chance he misses Week 7. Denver allows the second-most rushing yards per game and the seventh-most fantasy points to running backs, and Love has handled 64% of Arizona’s backfield carries when healthy. If his ankle keeps him out again, Tyler Allgeier is a FLEX, even at 3.0 yards per carry. Bam Knight ran for 80 yards on 15 carries last week, giving him FLEX viability as well if Love misses.
Wide Receiver
Michael Wilson: START, WR2
Kendrick Bourne: FLEX, WR4
Michael Wilson is averaging almost double-digit targets, and only one other receiver has more end zone targets. But the problem is those eight uber-valuable targets have only produced one touchdown. Things have been a little weird in the Arizona receiving room after the departure of Marvin Harrison Jr., with Kendrick Bourne receiving 8 targets in each of the last two games, compared to 7 each for Wilson. But Wilson did play his highest percentage of snaps in the slot this season against the Rams in Week 6, so he’s not just a “Sacrificial X” like some were theorizing after MHJ’s departure. With Patrick Surtain II returning to practice, this Denver defense could be a tough customer, but I’m fine with firing up Wilson as a WR2 and Bourne as a deep-league FLEX this week.
Tight End
Trey McBride: START, TE1
Trey McBride is one of those players you barely have to think about anymore. He’s basically your Calendar app, nothing flashy but somehow involved in everything you do. You can check the schedule if you want, but “Trey McBride: 8 catches” was already on there.
Defense/Special Teams
Arizona Cardinals: SIT
Arizona is tied for the most points allowed per game.
