Minnesota Vikings

Quarterback

Kyler Murray: START (in Superflex), Borderline QB1

The Lions give up the most fantasy points, passing yards, and passing touchdowns per game to the position, with every quarterback Detroit has faced this season having thrown at least two touchdowns and clearing 240 yards. Kyler Murray has been meh at best in a Minnesota offense that throws less often than all but two teams, but he is running again with 21 carries across his last three starts. This is the week to find out whether or not Murray can return to borderline elite status when the matchup is right.

Lions Fan Editor’s Note: Last week, Brian Branch returned to the Detroit secondary, and the Lions’ defense looked the best it has all season. With Kerby Joseph also returning to practice on Wednesday, this defense could be more formidable than the Swiss cheese impression it’s put forth over the season’s first several weeks. I agree that this is still a plus matchup for Murray, but it’s worth keeping in mind for this week and future matchups against Detroit.

Running Back

Jordan Mason: START, RB2
Aaron Jones Sr.: FLEX, RB4
Demond Claiborne: SIT

Jordan Mason led the Vikings in rushing last week in his first game back from injured reserve, taking 15 carries for 68 yards, and Aaron Jones limped off the field with a knee injury. If Jones sits, Mason is a high-upside but risky RB2 against a Detroit defense giving up more total yards than anybody in football. If Jones plays, the situation gets murkier, but I’m still rolling with Mason.

Wide Receiver

Justin Jefferson: START, WR1
Jordan Addison: START, WR2
Jauan Jennings: SIT

Detroit has allowed the third-most fantasy points and the third-most receiving yards per game to wide receivers, which is exactly the week Justin Jefferson needs. JJettas hasn’t hit 100 yards once this season and is averaging 6.2 targets a game, numbers that look like they shouldn’t be anywhere near him. Jordan Addison has one touchdown and 183 yards in five games, so he’s a start based on matchup and not production. Jauan Jennings had his best game of the season last week, and it was two catches for 34 yards. You tell me if you should start him.

Tight End

T.J. Hockenson: START, TE1

This is the best tight end matchup on the board, with Detroit allowing the most receptions, receiving yards, touchdowns, and fantasy points per game to the position. T.J. Hockenson leads Minnesota in target share over the last three weeks at 22.1 percent and leads the team in red zone targets. He’s only seen more than five targets once, and that game turned into 13 catches for 24.9 points.

Defense/Special Teams

Minnesota Vikings: START

Minnesota allows the fewest points in the league and is tied for the most sacks per game. Detroit’s offense can light up the scoreboard, but this defense has earned the benefit of the doubt.

Detroit Lions

Quarterback

Jared Goff: START (in Superflex), Borderline QB1

Fourteen touchdowns and zero interceptions in six games, so Jared Goff has earned every bit of trust you want to give him. But Minnesota is the matchup where quarterbacks go to die. The Vikings have allowed one passing touchdown over their last five games, and give up the fewest points in the league to quarterbacks. Goff at home in a dome is the reason you start him. But be prepared for things to get ugly.

Running Back

Jahmyr Gibbs: START, RB1
Sione Vaki: SIT
Jacob Saylors: SIT

Starting Jahmyr Gibbs is less of a decision and more of a weekly formality. For Halloween, Gibbs went as Jeff Hardy, which fits. Every time you watch, you’re thinking, “There’s no way he’s actually going to try that,” right before it works.

Wide Receiver

Amon-Ra St. Brown: START, WR1
Jameson Williams: START, WR3
Isaac Teslaa: SIT

Watch the injury report on Amon-Ra St. Brown, who is questionable with an ankle injury and didn’t practice on Wednesday. He’s commanding 29.7 percent of the targets over the last three weeks, with 16 red zone looks on the season, and is a matchup proof must start as long as he’s active. Jameson Williams has four touchdowns in his last two games and has not played fewer than 82 percent of the snaps all year. Both of them are walking into the stingiest receiver matchup in football. But both are still startable.

Tight End

Sam Laporta: START, TE1

Sam LaPorta is coming off his worst game of the season, and the schedule does him no favors. Minnesota has not allowed a touchdown to a tight end all year and gives up a meager 6.9 fantasy points per game to the position. LaPorta is still carrying an 18 percent target share with 10 red zone looks and snap counts in the 90s, so you’re still starting him. But he’s much less of a sure thing than usual.

Defense/Special Teams

Detroit Lions: SIT

Detroit is tied for the most sacks per game, but it also gives up the most yards in the league. No thanks.
